EpiCrystals unveil new green laser for pico-projectors

Finland's EpiCrystals announced a new green (532nm) laser aimed for pico projectors. They say that the new laser diode is the smallest and cheapest around. The company's technology (called DeCIBEL) uses a two-component design : the green laser is a 1064nm GaAs-based infrared laser diode which then go through frequency conversion to a visible wavelength using a PPLN (periodically poled lithium niobate) nonlinear crystal. The laser uses a single integrated lens.

EpiCrystals claim that the optical output power is more than 60mW, the modulation speed is over 100Mhz and the speckle is reduced by more than 70% (but we're not sure to which green laser they are comparing this to).

The new green laser module will be available in early 2012 (first quarter) and will cost around $45 for 10,000 unit volume. Still very expensive...
