Researchers hope to create a green laser for pico-projectors using II-VI materialsA team from Sony, Hitachi and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has developed a low-threshold-current green laser that emits 1.5 mW at 545 nm. The team used a family of II-VI semiconductor materials based on the alloy BeZnCdSe. This is actually an old method developed years ago, but the team has made some changes to make the laser last longer (originally it lasted about 100 hours). This design is still not suited for pico-projectors as the power is too low, but the team hopes that changes in the design could enable 50mW. via Optics.org
